Just a Quick One

Ms. Pants asked me to join the flickr group 365 Days over a week ago now, and I am surprised at how much I am enjoying it. Honestly. The camera goes everywhere with me now and, for once, I'm actually thinking about pictures and how to take them. It doesn't mean I'm doing a good job of it, it just means that at least I consider the light and the background, for a change.

I'm also surprised at how I look.

Really surprised.

I'm not an oil painting, but people likely won't go running, screaming in the streets to get away from me:

- On the train.

- Dicking around with Gorby (which has become my favorite shot of me, despite everything that's wrong with me, because, dammit, I just look happy there and I don't do happy lately.)

- And me, as Lola.

I see these photos and I think (like yesterday) I'm not beautiful, but why do I hate myself so much? There's loads of imperfections and most of the time I cringe at what I see, but in general, it's not all bad there.

I'm not good at taking photos but I never expected to see some of the things I have been seeing. Mostly? I never expected to enjoy being a part of the expedition.

Thank you, Pants. I'm having fun. And I needed that.

-H.

1 I love the girl on the train photo! You really are a very beautiful lady from the inside out!

2 I know it's hard for most people to think of themselves as attractive, but I think that picture of you on the train is absolutely beautiful. (Not that the others aren't, but that one struck me particularly for some reason).

3 Helen, stop that! You are a very pretty woman. That train photo is proof of it - if you need proof.

4 Hooray!! I'm glad you like it. I was hoping you'd get into it. I copied April and joined when she did. Then I started inviting. It's also the only flickr group that I'm in (and I'm in many) that I check constantly. I keep up with the people in the group. Everyone is nice and accessible. Conversations aren't stuttered or really even monitored. It's just a nice flow of people. The project is also helping me look at myself differently as well. We'll get there. Just takes time to get out of the hole.

5 I started it because I needed to see myself in a different way, too. It's helping. In a weird way, it's helping more than anything else ever has. I'm going shopping for my own "lola" wig tonight.

6 The pictures are stunningly awesome, but I really can't decide which is more insightful: the photography or the commentary? I love that you put yourself out there like that. And then have the audacity to claim you aren't brave. ;-)

7 I'm having a fun time with it, too. I still kind of feel all dorky when I'm trying to make a specific effect, but I'm pretty happy with the photos I've been producing. Who knew?
